Vertical Gardening, A Postscript: Plus Bits and Pieces of Industry News

– Posted in: Miscellaneous

vertical-garden-photo-resizedSince my post on Vertical Gardening a couple of weeks ago, I’ve discovered some sources that might prove helpful for those of you who want to try your hand at it on a small scale. Smith and Hawken  has a few new products: a Vertical Garden Planting Panel, a Large Vertical Garden and a Red Vine Trellis. Gardener’s Supply is now offering Indoor Living Wall Kits.  And Joost Baker, a well known Australian artist, has created his own ‘line’ of vertical gardens.

And in other industry news:

While several past  Superbowl advertisers are dropping out  like flies this year, Teleflora has bought a 30″ spot in one of the most watched and expensive broadcasting events of the year. A shout out to them!

The Perennial Plant Association has come out with its 2009 Perennial Plant of The Year. It’s the versatile and hardy ornamental grass, Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’.

For all of you Nintendo and gardening fanatics, a new video game for its DS System is being introduced this spring. It’s called ‘Gardening Mama’. Players will be able to use the touch screen to grow flowers, veggies and fruits, dig holes and plant seeds. Leave it to those folks at Nintendo to come up with something like this!!

And finally,  The 2nd Sonoma Environmental Film Festival is taking place this week in Sonoma, California. My pal John Greenlee, garden designer and ornamental grass expert extraordinaire, will be speaking about ‘Growing The Movement Against Turf’. He and our fellow blogger, Saxon Holt, have a book being published this fall by Timber Press, Meadows By Design. Who would have ever thought that we would actually be hearing about an Environmental Film Festival? Pretty cool!

If we could just convince Nintendo to donate a tree or plant to a park for every Garden Game sold .

Cameron-
All I can say is brilliant!! Perhaps we should get a petition going about this (no joke!) Let me know if you’re interested in pursuing this. Fran

I also like the Ikea trellis I put up for my more light-weight vines. It’s a modular trellis made of aluminum called “Salvia” and VERY reasonably priced.
You size the trellis yourself. I also like how it looks. My post at http://tmousecmouse.blogspot.com/search/label/Stuff has two pictures. No mail order, unfortunately.
