Praying With Our Eyes

– Posted in: Miscellaneous

Echinacea in woodland setting at ChanticleerI had a wonderful conversation with a dear friend of mine early this morning. He told me about an experience he had last night at his temple, which happens to be a chapel in the woods (how terrific is that?) In her sermon, the rabbi said that as we go through our day, we have the opportunity to ‘pray with our eyes’.

As gardeners, I think we share a sense of awe and we marvel at the beauty of nature: often in the most unlikely of places. But I never quite thought of these moments as ‘praying with our eyes’. When I heard that phrase, I thought ‘Yes, that is a beautiful thought that I want to pass on to the gardening community”.

What a glorious thought, Fran! Reminds me of the Navajo desire to “walk in beauty.” I’ll try to remember to “pray with my eyes” when I’m surrounded by nature’s beauty, in and out of my backyard! Thank you for sharing this lovely concept.

Our friend Ben,
I am a fan of most beliefs that have to do with American Indian culture. They are so tied into nature that it is inspiring for me. The phase ‘walk with beauty’ is lovely. Thanks for your words. Fran

Thank you for this beautiful and powerful thought.

Lisa-
Am glad you like it. I agree that it is powerful and already when in my garden, it is resonating within me. Fran

Lovely thought. I think anything that we do for the good can be offered to God as a prayer.

Catherine-
That’s a beautiful thought as well. Thanks for sharing with us. Fran

Approaching the world with a heart open to the sense of wonder is very important. I like your friend’s expression for it.

Thanks mss. So do I. It rings true and makes alot of sense! Fran

A beautiful thought. I so appreciate God in the garden, but I never thought of it as prayer.~~Dee

Neither had I, although when I gaze at a magnificent flower, some bees or butterflies doing their thing in the garden or am overwhelmed by the sky or stars at night, I do feel the presence of God but have never thought of it in terms of ‘praying with our eyes’. Fran

Too often I gaze critically at my garden — weed that, move this, wrong colors there. Thank you for the reminder to stop and appreciate the beauty — to pray.
