Sunset Edible Garden Cookbook Giveaway

– Posted in: Contests and Giveaways

CONGRATULATIONS TO WINNERS Dawn Standke, Lori Key, Robert Bornstein, Holly Chaille, Debby West, Donna Walter, Jennifer Lachman and Amy Castillo. That’s right, EIGHT of you. A tie of sorts. Each time I read the comments, I kept adding someone to the winners’ list. I figured, Sunset is being very generous, so what’s three more books? And if need be, I’ll pick up the tab. Your community gardens and the people you feed from your garden…well, I wish you ALL could have won.  As a consolation, I’ll post Sunset’s Chocolate Zucchini Rum Cake Recipe here in time for zucchini season. Some of you offered to send me your extra zucchinis, ha. (You were kidding, right?) Many thanks for visiting GGW. Come back and see us. You won’t want to miss my next post, on bizarre cactus. Love you guys!– Debra

Sunset asked if I’d like five copies of their new Edible Garden Cookbook: Fresh, healthy cooking from the garden to give to GGW’s readers. I responded, “Are you KIDDING??”

It’s a very cool book. I sampled some of the recipes at the Sunset test kitchen recently. You know how having too much zucchini is a joke among gardeners? Well, wait ’til you taste Sunset’s Chocolate Zucchini Rum Cake. “It’s a fine use of zucchini that has perhaps grown a little too big,” the book says. I’m in danger of growing a little too big, too, now that I have the recipe in my hot little hands. Eating the rich, moist, chewy, chocolaty cake was an OMG moment. Trust me, there’s no hint that it’s healthy.

Whether I grow the veggies myself or buy them at the farmer’s market, I also look forward to Spaghetti Squash with Jalapeno Cream; Filo Tomato Tart; Arugula Parmesan Salad; Swiss Chard Pesto Pasta; Fresh Corn Salad with Avocado and Basil; and one I can attest to (having tasted it) Swiss Chard and Sausage Frittata. The book even has fig recipes—which thrills me, because the fig tree I planted last year has really taken off. There’s a quick jam made with fresh figs, blackberries and orange juice that sounds great for stirring into plain yogurt. Yum.

Above: Served at the Blogger’s Breakfast at the Sunset Test Kitchen: Golden Olive-Oil Roasted Potatoes, left, and a fresh fruit salad, right. According to the new cookbook, “Soaking the potatoes at least a day (and up to 2 days) ahead makes them even crisper on the outside and creamier in the middle.”

To enter to win a free copy of the Sunset’s Edible Garden Cookbook, leave a comment below stating why you’d like to have it. I’ll choose five winners based on your comments at 12:01 a.m. PST on May 31, 2012 and contact the winners within 24 hours. They will be listed here, in red, as an addendum to this post. If a proposed winner forfeits or does not claim the prize by June 3, the prize will be re-awarded.

The number of eligible entries will determine the odds of winning. This giveaway is limited to U.S. residents only, who are over the age of 18. No purchase necessary to win. This sweepstakes is void where prohibited by law. By entering this giveaway, you are agreeing to these conditions.

Disclaimer: The book was provided for me to review. I won’t be responding to each of your comments as I normally do, but rest assured I’ll read each with keen interest. Good luck everyone!

Sounds like a fabulous book! I’d love to have it on hand to quickly grab when I get a big harvest of one certain veggie. Great blog!

Laura May 21, 2012, 11:49 pm

I would love to win this book and also would love to visit the Sunset headquarters.

Happy gardening!

Cameron Kane May 22, 2012, 7:10 am

This year I sold my company and retired to New England from Maryland. I also went from City living and container gardening to two big yards full of clay and rocks! I have become a gardening addict and have worked happily from dawn to dusk organizing nature into what will one day be my own little Eden. I’ve also gotten interested in healthy eating and am avidly visiting local farms and Farmers markets and am beginning
to learn to cook and eat local and
Organic. I laugh because I quiver with excitement while approaching an array of gorgeous vegetables. Who knew! HA
Your blog has been a big help in my education. This book would be yet another addition to my new found life.
Thanks and regards.

Deborah May 22, 2012, 7:10 am

I can’t resist trying new vegetables in my tiny urban community garden plot – this year so far it is shiso and kailan – but in reality, when it comes time to cook what I grow, I am a bit stumped. And when I have gluts? What am I supposed to do with extra fennel bulbs and the inevitable zucchinis? I’m hoping this book can help!

Judy Fairlamb May 22, 2012, 7:52 am

I’ve always been a flower gardener, not a vegetable gardener, but the last 2 years I’ve grown a small kitchen garden. There’s nothing better than fresh produce, I’d love to try the recipes in this book!

christine bliss May 22, 2012, 8:15 am

Love my Sunset Cookbooks and my Sunset Garden books, so a cookbook for gardeners sounds perfect! Guaranteed to be have tomatoe juice spatters as soon as the Early Girls turn red 🙂

Kristina Rost May 22, 2012, 8:29 am

Planting in Edible Plants on our recycled HUD 1 acre property as Retirement Plan 6.0, my husband and I are now in our mid 50’s and unemployed displaced workers. Learning to live off the land and make do with what it produces which can be large harvests of one kind.

Amy Beam May 22, 2012, 8:34 am

Yes I would love this cookbook. Im always looking for new healthy recipes (especially vegetarian) that I can make using the things that I grow.

Kathy May 22, 2012, 8:36 am

I ‘d love the cookbook just in time for summer meals and entertaining. Just the thing to get me to stop gardening and start cooking!

Cathy May 22, 2012, 8:53 am

Sounds like a fantastic addition to both the kitchen and gardening bookshelves. I never knew that it was even “okay” to leave potatoes soaking for so long. (I had some notion that the minerals and vitamins leached out if you did that. Silly me.) I wonder what other little gems this book is hiding between its covers! (Not to mention chocolate and zucchini in the same recipe – two of my husband’s favorites!)

Judy May 22, 2012, 9:37 am

Hi Debra, The book sounds like a book I’ve been looking for! I am a vegetarian, but eat eggs and dairy. My hubby is not, and might be a bit bored by my cooking (never complains, however). Some new ideas, such as soaking the potatoes, are what I need. (He loves potatoes)! Farmer’s Markets here in Sonoma County abound, so recipes for all varieties of vegetables would be very welcome. Thank you so much.

Heather May 22, 2012, 9:49 am

It looks like a perfect book for summer cooking, sign me up please!

Celeste Melville May 22, 2012, 10:38 am

I always gorge myself on what is in season in my garden, so having new recipes for the overabundance is always welcome! I love garden books and cook books!

Peggy Z May 22, 2012, 10:39 am

I, too, would like this book. The Sunset brand says it all for quality. I am a rose gardener and I make miniature gardens in pots. This year I planted my first tomato…purchased at Tomatomania. Maybe the book would inspire me to plant a vegetable garden…I need a push.

Deborah West May 22, 2012, 11:35 am

Lexington County Master Gardener’s have an annual tomato tasting in July. I bet there are some great tomato (and basil and pepper, etc.) recipes I can prepare and share with my tribe. Thanks for offering this “Edible Garden Cookbook” giveaway! Can’t wait to check this book out. Sunset always does a superb job on their garden and cookbooks.

Liz May 22, 2012, 11:45 am

So, while my garden is small and limited in the amounted of full sun I am determined to grow salad greens, tomatoes, roma beans and flowers. I have some edible flowers – borage and violas. There is an old fig tree which produces lots of figs – I am always looking for ways to serve these marvelous treasures. My father planted this tree many years ago.

thanks.

Kathryn Swift May 22, 2012, 12:14 pm

Not only do have have my own small vegie garden but 2 years ago I joined my local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). A CSA is where you buy a share in a small farm’s harvest. Not only are you supporting your local farmer, but you are also getting very fresh vegetables grown close to home. I’ve been introduced to new vegies I’ve never cooked before as well as having an adundance of fresh vegies. This cook book sounds like just the book I need in order to get creative with all these vegies. Thank you for this opportunity. The recipes you mentioned sound heavenly.

Kathi Cambiano May 22, 2012, 12:18 pm

Just what I need to help me enjoy what I’ve sown!

Shirley Kost May 22, 2012, 12:45 pm

I would love this book for my husband! He is trying so hard to get into cooking and we really need to eat more veggies! It just might helps us live longer and happier! Thank you Debra, for all you efforts to make all of us be better informed and enjoy the small things in life!

Ginny Stibolt May 22, 2012, 1:54 pm

I’ll bring this book with me on my book tour throughout Florida next year. It will provide the perfect complement to my organic vegetable book for Florida, which will come out in Feb. While we provide some recipes, having more to choose from is a good thing.

Cathryn Farr May 22, 2012, 6:20 pm

I work 2 vegetable gardens and an herb garden each year with my children and I love that I don’t have to buy any produce from the grocery store in the summer! BUT, what do I do with an overabundance of leeks, or can you use them the next spring when they are just about to flower? I don’t mind experimenting, but I don’t generally like wasting potatoes, cream and butter when I don’t have to. I’m hoping this book will tell me some of those details and save me the time as well as offering other recipes which will help me make the most of all the wonders I grow!
Thanks!
Cathryn

Deborah Robertson May 22, 2012, 10:35 pm

I use my Sunset garden books all he time, and now look forward to this Sunset cookbook. I’m growing 7 different Heirloom tomatoes in containers this year, as well as unusual shaped eggplants & squash- need recipes for these new (to me) veggies.

Matt Di Clemente May 22, 2012, 11:21 pm

I am a vegetarian and an organic gardener. Growing and cooking vegetables are my passion in life! Thank-you for the fantastic blog!

Stacie Havron May 23, 2012, 11:47 am

I would LOVE to have this book! I am a fairly new and younger gardener, but I have enjoyed experimenting with different veggies. I married a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy, and my garden has allowed me to sneak healthy veggies he wouldn’t have touched with a 10 foot pole into meals! This book sounds like a delightful addition to my healthy cooking scheming! 🙂

Candy Suter May 23, 2012, 4:31 pm

Hi Debra! About 4 months ago I was told that I am and have probably have been for a long time terribly allergic to mold and candida. Since sugar feeds yeast I also had to give up that. Yikes! So since that time I have been eating completely whole foods, nothing processed. I feel sooooooooo much better. It is amazing how much better I feel. A lot of my medical problems have gone away. So this book would really help with recipes of fresh vegies and all! So that is why I would love to have this book.

But guess what! I won this book from Janine at Laguna Dirt! I have not gotten it yet. But it should arrive soon.

Daryl Robertson May 23, 2012, 4:31 pm

Gardening is our passion and trying great new recipes from Sunset would add greatly to our enjoyment of fresh homegrown treats. Sunset has been a trusted source of information throughout our garden work so we would know ahead of time that recipes would be winners.

Amie Gillingham May 24, 2012, 6:19 am

We grow a lot of veg via square foot gardening in raised beds. A lot of it is consumed before it even makes it into the house, but I wouldn’t mind a bit of inspiration so our harvests could go that much further feeding our family.

Joan May 24, 2012, 7:12 am

I’d love to win this one. I lived in CA for several years when hubby had a job there. I fell in love with Sunset Magazine and their cookbooks then. I’d love to cook some from this one to remind me of that time in our life. I’d put it to good use cooking things from the garden.

ann May 24, 2012, 8:33 am

Have loved Sunset publishing for many years.

Holly Chaille May 24, 2012, 11:54 am

As the director of a program called the Fresh Food Initiative, which teaches refugees and immigrants how to grow culturally-appropriate foods we NEED this book! This summer we are kicking off a world food art project called the WOW Garden Project and I’ve been collecting recipes to include in our public art display. Plus, I promise not to mail you all our extra zucchini if we get a copy!

Sara P. May 24, 2012, 3:23 pm

I finally planted a garden this spring!! This book would be perfect for me as I cook my way through my bounty (well, I hope there is lots of bounty 🙂

Jennifer Albanese May 24, 2012, 9:19 pm

I love to garden. I love to cook. I love to read. But, what I really love is reading a book to help me cook the plants I grow in my garden! I have fresh foods, fresh enthusiasm and now I need fresh ideas.

Theresa May 24, 2012, 9:44 pm

My garden is growing so fast and I would love to have another sunset book to cook from.

Thank you.

Leslie W May 25, 2012, 12:29 pm

I’d like to win so I can have & use new recipes. I planted my first garden this year and am at a loss as what to make from my yields except salad. So this would be awesome to win!

Donna Walter May 25, 2012, 1:40 pm

I have been involved with starting two community gardens in the past 3 years. We have 57 beds under cultivation and we provided almost a thousand pounds of food last year to our local food pantry. Our gardeners are always looking for new recipes to create with their bounty as are the folks being served by the food pantry. I am an avid cook and food preserve and would love to try some of the recipes in this book. I have been a subscriber to Sunset Magazine, even though we no longer live in the west, and love their innovative recipes. Thanks for the consideration!!

Jennifer Lachman May 26, 2012, 12:05 pm

I have live in the same town on the same street since I was 7 years old and always thought that it would be impossible to grow a garden in the mix of clay and rock that my neighbors and I call a yard. Then a year ago a woman moves in and casually puts up a raised bed garden. I spent all of last summer enviously watching her vegetables grow wishing I had thought of that first. So this year I started my own raised bed garden and can’t wait to start using my own home grown food in the kitchen. I would love to win this cookbook. Thanks again.

Meryl May 26, 2012, 11:54 pm

I love Sunset Magazine, and would love to win this book!

Louis May 26, 2012, 11:55 pm

I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and am mostly vegetarian. This book would be perfect for me.

This sounds like it is up my alley. I love using my vegetables fresh from the garden and am always looking for new recipes.

Ariel Matty May 27, 2012, 10:54 am

Frederique Lavoipierre May 27, 2012, 11:04 am

I would love a cookbook that gives me some new ways to use my garden harvest. That fig/blackberry/OJ jam sounds delicious. I can’t wait to try it!

Leslie May 27, 2012, 11:13 am

I CAN ALWAYS USE A NEW SUNSET COOKBOOK IN MY KITCHEN! • I’ve been a SUNSET fan ever since I can remember…I grew up with them. My mom and dad had old issues incased in their perspective yearly binders that Sunset use to have available. I don’t think Sunset has those dark green binders any more but I know that over the years my dad and I still subscribe. BTW… I was once a finalist for a recipe I submitted at the last minute. It was such an awesome trip to arrive at the Sunset kitchen/pantry and cook for a panel of judges. • THANKS FOR THE OFFERING!

Mara Aditajs May 27, 2012, 11:22 am

Here in northern California there are so many choices to find great fruits & vegetables. Two weeks ago I put my family on a fresh fruit & veggie healthy meal plan. This book sounds just like something that would give me sensational ideas and keep it fresh!!! (pun intended)
Thanks, Mara

David Dixon May 27, 2012, 11:23 am

By and large I am the cook in the house, while Paul is the gardener. This year we’ve been blessed with a bounty of tomatoes from his garden, along with many herbs and different types of greens. He swears by Sunset and although I grew up in the Midwest I too have come to enjoy the arrival of each issues of the magazine every month to find new and interesting recipes. Having this book will be a great addition to my set of regularly referenced cook books.

Sheri May 27, 2012, 11:25 am

I adore Sunset Magazine! I have a daughter who is an amazing cook and also has a food blog. I would love to win this book for her!!

Shirley May 27, 2012, 11:38 am

I would love to win this book because I enjoy cooking food from my own gardens to share with family and friends. Since I grow a lot of figs, the fig recipes sound especially helpful.

Darnell (Gravy Girl) May 27, 2012, 12:20 pm

I’m always on the lookout for new and fresh ideas to share with my family and my readers. I write a food blog with a Midwest flair and fruits and veggies are “all-coastal”.

Jennifer Hammer May 27, 2012, 12:50 pm

What a Fantabulous giveaway! I love all my books by sunset! This would be a wonderful addition. I love new ideas of cooking from your garden. The Rum Zuchinni cake sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing. Good luck y’all!

I would love to win a copy and share the recipes with my social network. My fans love my YouTube cooking segments as well, I will be able to do a segment on some of the recipes.

Kat White May 27, 2012, 9:05 pm

Why would I love to win this book? I love to garden and I love to eat.

Sarah Burd May 27, 2012, 9:16 pm

Edible gardening is not just about gardening. It’s not about eating. It’s about creating a self-sustaining environment that not only reduces your carbon footprint, but also gives back to the earth and the creatures around us. This is what I attempt to achieve through my own garden, and through teaching my children the art of giving back. We give back nutrients to the earth, whole foods to our friends and family, and health to our community. THAT is what edible gardening is all about!

Joe May 27, 2012, 9:37 pm

Are you kidding?! Who wouldn’t want another way to help cook fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from one’s own garden?

Michele Knecht May 27, 2012, 11:12 pm

I love growing and cooking my own food here on the beautiful central coast.

Amy Castillo May 28, 2012, 8:33 am

Oh, lovely! With a full garden and now working on an organic farm here in Los Osos, my hands are full of wonderful veggies. This book would be perfect to add to my growing collection of fresh recipes!

Matthew May 28, 2012, 5:34 pm

I have recently started gardening and would love to have this resource in helping me learn how to use the produce from my small garden.

Lori Key May 28, 2012, 5:44 pm

My husband, a type 2 diabetic, had a massive stroke in late 2009. Since then I have tried to cook only healthy, locally obtained foods. With my help, he has now been taken off of his diabetic meds and continues to keep his blood sugar under control. I am always looking for new recipes to try and would welcome a copy of the Sunset Edible Garden Cookbook. I am a fan of all gardening ideas from Sunset. Thanks!

Carolsue May 28, 2012, 10:07 pm

We just moved into a house that actually has room for a garden. It will be my first experience planting different vegetables, etc. that will end up on our dinner table — I need recipes and help along the way and this book sounds great. I’m really happy I will help the environment as well as feed my family with fresher, tastier home-grown vegetables!

Dawn Standke May 28, 2012, 11:39 pm

Hi Debra,
What a great idea – to have a contest to give away copies of the book you reviewed. I’d love to win a copy to give me new ideas for using the edibles I grow.
I’ve been gardening ever since I was able to follow my parents around in our backyard turned giant vegetable garden. In northern Minnesota the season to grow vegetables is short, but my family dealt with it by growing a larger and larger garden each summer. They did reserve two small garden plots for my brother and me to grow whatever we chose.
Gardening with my parents is just a fond memory now, but I am happy to be gardening year round in San Diego, and I still love to grow things to eat. I have to admit, though, that I’m not that creative with using what I grow in the kitchen. I’d love to win this cookbook to help me put my harvest to good use.
Thanks, and happy gardening,
Dawn Standke

Lin May 29, 2012, 12:36 am

I love Sunset magazine and the recipes they post there, but I can’t keep the recipes straight month to month! Plus I have 4 kids and we have an abundant garden. We are adventurous eaters, plus we love having my kids friends over and introducing them to whole fresh food, but I am always pressed for time. Recipes clipped and tucked into my binder just doesn’t cut it. This book is PERFECT!!!!

theresa n May 29, 2012, 7:03 am

I’ve planted my garden and this book would be wonderful to have come picking time.

Bria May 29, 2012, 1:30 pm

Looks wonderful! With all the veggies I’m planting this Spring, I’m eager to learn more farm-to-table recipes and this looks like it would be very helpful!

Deborah West May 30, 2012, 10:45 am

Each July the Lexington County Master Gardener’s in SC bring in their home-grown tomatoes to show and tell at our monthly meeting. It is so much fun and the table sags from so many wonderful recipes to sample. I can’t wait to try “Filo Tomato Tart” recipe in “Sunset Edible Garden” this year!

Susan May 30, 2012, 11:36 am

Always looking for new garden dishes to make for our Master Gardener meetings!

Ray Ritter May 30, 2012, 12:00 pm

I love to cook! This sounds like a great cookbook.

Lorna Bank May 30, 2012, 2:26 pm

we just moved from “city” of Santa Monica to the “country” of Topanga and our lives have completely changed! We are learning about gardening (we bought 1 1/3 acres, most of which is beautifully landscaped but requires tons of time and love to maintain) and just found out about you last weekend when I decided to jump in and try my hand at succulent containers! I found a new love. We are still very much in the “beginner’s mind” stages on all of these matters, but are having a great time learning and experimenting. This book sounds like such fun and a great new education tool!!
