Fran, thanks for these snippets. I’d also recommend the recent book by Adam Nicolson, “Sissinghurst, an Unfinished History”, which tells of the more recent past of this wonderful place. Nicolson, grandson of Sackville-West, tells of his childhood memories, and of the challenges and frustrations of living in a home he loves but which is now owned and managed by the National Trust. He writes evocatively and unsentimentally about his dreams for Sissinghurst and his many mistakes and misjudgements in trying to influence its future.
