Picture This Rule Update

– Posted in: Garden Photography

Ok, folks: we’re giving up on the rule that Picture This entries should be approximately 500 pixels on the longest side. If you’ve already entered and want to give a link to a larger image, please leave your updated link on the main announcement post before the entry deadline (11:59 PM Eastern time on Wednesday, July 21, 2010), and I will change the link in your entry in the July entry gallery.

We are NOT requiring you to enter a larger photo if you do not wish to change your entry. Note that the photos in the gallery are automatically resized; the only difference you’ll notice is if you click on the gallery photo to follow the link to the original image.

Nan gardens on 4 acres in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In the firm belief that every garden ought to have a pretentious-sounding (or at least pretentious-looking) name, she refers to her home grounds as "Hayefield." There, she experiments with a wide variety of plants and planting styles, from cottage gardens and color-based borders to managed meadows, naturalistic plantings, and veggies--all under the watchful eyes of her two pet alpacas, Daniel and Duncan.

Fickle, aren’t you?

I had enough trouble with ‘approximately’, and now it seems the sky’s the limit.
It takes time to find an image that meets the brief and also looks good in the smaller format. A lot of time. And it may not be the best image that one would have wanted to submit.

Can you tell I’m peeved?

Sorry to have wasted your time. If we’d enforced that rule, we’d have had almost no eligible entries this month. And if we didn’t, then someone would have called us on it. We get complaints no matter what we do.

Hey, it’s good to be flexible. I’ve never had time to enter your contests but perhaps I should. You always receive amazing entries, regardless of previous size limitations! It’s such fun seeing what everyone else sees – thanks for taking time to run the contest.

Ah so. Joco’s blog is called Serious Grouching. So we’ll take that with a spoonful of salt? It is supposed to be a FUN contest.
Thanks go to Nan and Rich 😉

And to Fran, too!

While I am happy that you are deciding to allow larger photo’s, the grouch is right, it is harder to get a good image at times in the smaller format, particularly of large landscape views, there still needs to be a size limit. Full size pictures can take forever to download and then you need to scroll all over to see them only in pieces or resize your monitor’s zoom to get the whole thing on the page.

Generally the 800 pixel range is a good size. At least for how my computer monitor is set.

And lucky you, everyone’s computer is set different and they will all have different opinions.

I completely agree with you, Christopher, and those are some of the reasons we instituted the rule in the first place. But from now on, it’s the individual entrant’s responsibility to post an image in a way that will show off to advantage. If the entrant wants to post a huge image that others (including the judge) can’t download or can view easily, then that’s his or her choice.
